Instead of fighting, you must flee, hide in shadows, and solve physics-based puzzles while managing a sanity meter that frays as you linger in darkness or stare at the lurking horrors. Interactive, physically simulated objects like doors and drawers, oppressive sound design, and constant vulnerability made its scares intensely personal and immersive. It reshaped modern horror gaming, popularizing the helpless, hide-and-run formula and the resource-scarcity tension that countless later titles followed.
