Resident Evil

1996 Capcom Survival horror Updated 26 Jul 2026

Resident Evil is a 1996 survival horror game developed by Capcom for the PlayStation. Players guide members of the elite S.T.A.R.S. police unit trapped in a mansion overrun with the undead and grotesque bio-engineered creatures, managing scarce ammunition while solving puzzles to escape.

The game helped define the survival horror genre, using fixed camera angles, deliberate pacing and resource scarcity to build dread, while item boxes, ink-ribbon saves and inventory limits forced constant tough decisions. Its emphasis on tension over action, its two playable characters with differing scenarios, and its cheesy but memorable live-action intro and voice acting made it a landmark of atmospheric horror.

Resident Evil launched a franchise that has shaped horror gaming for decades and helped popularize the term survival horror. The original has been remade with substantially updated visuals and refined design, and both classic and modernized versions are available on current platforms.
