Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider is a 1996 action-adventure developed by Core Design. Players control archaeologist-adventurer Lara Croft as she explores ancient ruins around the world, solving environmental puzzles, navigating treacherous platforming and battling wildlife and rival hunters in search of a mystical artifact.
The game combined 3D exploration, acrobatic movement, including running, jumping, swimming and grabbing ledges, and block-pushing puzzles in expansive, atmospheric tomb environments, all built around a confident female protagonist who quickly became a pop-culture icon. Its emphasis on lonely discovery, precise platforming and a controllable camera set it apart from the shooters that dominated the era.
Lara Croft went on to become one of gaming's most recognizable figures across sequels, films and a full series reboot. The original can be enjoyed today through digital re-releases and remastered collections that update it for modern systems while preserving its classic design.
