King's Quest
King's Quest is a 1984 adventure game developed by Sierra On-Line, created by Roberta Williams and originally commissioned for IBM's PCjr. Players guide Sir Graham through the fairy-tale kingdom of Daventry on a quest to recover three lost magical treasures and win the throne, solving puzzles drawn from folklore while navigating dangers and encountering figures like Rumpelstiltskin.
A pioneering title using the AGI engine, it introduced an animated pseudo-3D world where the character could walk behind, in front of, and around objects, combined with a text parser for typed commands. This blend of graphics and interactivity felt revolutionary compared to static or text-only adventures and helped define the graphic adventure genre while launching one of Sierra's flagship franchises.
King's Quest spawned many sequels and a later episodic reimagining of the series, and the early games remain available digitally as historically important cornerstones of adventure gaming.
