The Last Ninja
The Last Ninja is a 1987 action-adventure developed by System 3, best known for its acclaimed release on the Commodore 64. Players control the ninja Armakuni on a quest for revenge against the evil shogun Kunitoki, journeying through six richly detailed isometric environments, from wilderness and dungeons to the shogun's inner sanctum, to recover a sacred scroll.
The game combined exploration, inventory-based puzzle solving, and martial-arts combat, requiring players to collect weapons such as nunchaku, swords, and shuriken along with keys and items needed to progress, while timing precise jumps between the isometric tiles. Its lavish, colourful visuals and Ben Daglish and Anthony Lees' acclaimed soundtrack pushed the C64's capabilities and made it one of the platform's standout and best-selling titles.
The Last Ninja became a bestselling series on home computers of the era, followed by two sequels. The original and its sequels remain accessible through retro compilations and emulation for those exploring classic computer gaming.
