Mortal Kombat
Also known as Mortal Kombat 1
Mortal Kombat is a 1992 fighting game developed by Midway for arcades. Using digitized footage of real actors for its combatants, it presents brutal one-on-one martial-arts duels in a dark fantasy tournament setting, famous for its gruesome finishing moves known as Fatalities.
The game distinguished itself with its gritty, photorealistic look and its graphic violence, which fueled enormous popularity and no small amount of controversy. Its secret characters like Reptile, hidden special moves, and shocking finishers performed with specific button sequences made it a magnet for players sharing tips and rumors, and a fixture of arcade culture.
The debate over its content helped prompt the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board content rating system in North America. The franchise endures today, and the original games can be experienced through various arcade compilations and re-releases.
