Soulcalibur
Soulcalibur is a 1998 fighting game developed by Namco, a weapon-based fighter that began in arcades before a celebrated Dreamcast release. It followed the quest for the cursed sword Soul Edge, pitting swordsmen, ninjas and warriors with distinct weapons against one another in a globe-spanning tale.
The game built on its predecessor Soul Edge with an eight-way run system that gave combat exceptional freedom of movement, alongside a deep guard-and-parry system and a satisfying ring-out mechanic. The Dreamcast version was hailed as a technical showcase that surpassed the arcade original, adding a Mission Battle mode and unlockable content, and it earned some of the highest review praise of its generation.
Soulcalibur launched a long-running series and has been re-released digitally for modern platforms, allowing players to enjoy one of the most acclaimed console launch titles and a lasting benchmark for weapon-based fighting.
