Fatal Fury
Fatal Fury is a 1991 fighting game developed by SNK for the Neo Geo, created by a team that helped shape the genre and centered on the hero Terry Bogard. Subtitled "King of Fighters," it follows a martial-arts tournament and a quest for revenge against the crime boss Geese Howard.
The game introduced a distinctive two-plane system, letting fighters shift between a foreground and background line to dodge attacks and reposition, adding a spatial dimension uncommon in its contemporaries. In single-player, the game paired the player against a series of opponents, and its emphasis on story and rivalries helped set the tone for SNK's fighting output.
Though later refined by its sequels, the original launched a franchise whose characters became SNK mainstays, with Terry Bogard appearing across the company's crossover titles and even guest-starring in other publishers' fighting games. Fatal Fury has been re-released in compilations and on classic-game services, and its enduring cast keeps the series alive in newer entries.
