Comix Zone
Comix Zone is a 1995 beat 'em up developed by Sega for the Genesis, built around the striking conceit that the hero is trapped inside the pages of a comic book. The action literally unfolds across illustrated panels, with the character leaping from frame to frame as the artwork comes to life around him.
Players punch and kick through enemies drawn by the story's own villain, tearing paper to open paths, using a pet rat companion, and solving small environmental puzzles. Its bold visual style, complete with speech bubbles, sketched sound effects, and villain narration scrawled across the panels, was unlike anything else on the console. Notably, the hero even lost health when the player used items, adding to its steep challenge.
Though short and punishingly difficult, it earned admiration for its inventive presentation and artistic ambition. The game has been re-released in Sega compilations and on classic-game services, where its distinctive comic-book gimmick still impresses.
