Virtua Tennis
Also known as Power Smash
Virtua Tennis is a 1999 sports game developed by Sega AM3, and it became one of the most acclaimed arcade tennis games ever made. Its accessible controls and fast, satisfying rallies made it an instant favorite in arcades and on the Dreamcast.
Simple timing-based commands for topspin, slice, and lob shots let anyone play immediately while leaving genuine depth in positioning, shot selection, and reading opponents, delivering fluid, exciting matches. The home console version added a hugely popular World Tour mode featuring player progression, tournaments, and a variety of amusing training mini-games that became a highlight in their own right. Its pick-up-and-play appeal, polish, and roster of real professional players made it a benchmark for the genre and a Dreamcast standout.
It launched a successful series across arcades and consoles over the following years, and it remains a widely cited reference point for accessible, arcade-style tennis done right.
