Age of Wonders is a 1999 turn-based strategy game developed by Triumph Studios. It combines empire-building with tactical fantasy combat, as players lead one of many races through a war-torn world, exploring the map, capturing and developing cities, recruiting heroes, and resolving battles on separate tactical maps when armies clash.
The game drew comparisons to Master of Magic and Heroes of Might and Magic, blending strategic conquest with a story-driven campaign centered on the conflict between the Keepers, who favor coexistence among races, and the vengeful Cult of Storms, with the player's allegiance shaping the path through the missions. Deep unit rosters, a wide array of magic and hero abilities, and rich fantasy lore won it a loyal audience and launched a long-running series that would grow considerably in scope.
