Populous
Populous is a 1989 god game developed by Bullfrog and designed by Peter Molyneux. Players take on the role of a deity guiding a population of followers, reshaping the landscape by raising and lowering terrain to create flat, habitable land that lets their people build settlements, multiply and ultimately overwhelm a rival divine power's worshippers.
The game is widely credited with defining the god game genre, giving players indirect, godlike influence over a world and its inhabitants rather than direct control of individual units. Its inventive concept, terrain-shaping mechanics and divine powers, from earthquakes and floods to volcanoes, offered a fresh kind of strategy built on manipulating an environment and a faithful population rather than commanding an army directly.
Populous was a landmark that inspired a whole category of divine strategy games and helped launch Molyneux's influential career. It remains available through digital re-releases, standing as an influential milestone in game design.
