Defender of the Crown

1986 Cinemaware Strategy Updated 26 Jul 2026

Defender of the Crown is a 1986 strategy game developed by Cinemaware, one of the earliest titles to combine strategic play with cinematic, storybook presentation and a showcase for the Commodore Amiga. Set in a medieval England torn between Saxons and Normans after the king's death, players take the role of a Saxon lord vying to conquer territory and ultimately become king.

The game blended turn-based map conquest, raising armies and managing gold, with arcade-style action sequences including jousting tournaments, sword duels, castle sieges using catapults, and Robin Hood-assisted raids to rescue captured maidens. All of this was wrapped in lavish, painterly graphics and digitised sound that showcased the Amiga's capabilities, making strategy accessible and dramatic for a wide audience even if the strategic depth was fairly light.

Defender of the Crown became a flagship for Cinemaware's cinematic approach and was widely ported to many systems. The original and later remakes remain available through re-releases and emulation for fans of classic strategy.
