Robotron: 2084
Robotron: 2084 is a 1982 shoot 'em up arcade game developed by Williams Electronics, designed by Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar. Set in a future where robots have turned on humanity, players battle relentless swarms of enemies in a single-screen arena, using twin joysticks to move in one direction while continuously firing in another, all while trying to rescue the last surviving human family members for bonus points.
Its innovative dual-stick control scheme and frantic, endlessly escalating chaos made it a landmark of intensity and one of the most influential arcade games ever made. Indestructible Hulks, deadly Brains that turn humans into Progs, and Enforcers that fill the screen with fire demanded constant movement, target prioritization, and split-second reflexes with no safe pause.
Robotron pioneered the twin-stick shooter, a control style still widely used in games today, and the game remains available through arcade compilations as a celebrated and enduring classic of the golden age.
