Doom
Doom is a first-person shooter developed by id Software and released in 1993, created by a team including John Carmack and John Romero. Players take the role of a lone space marine fighting a demonic invasion unleashed on the moons of Mars and in Hell itself, battling through maze-like levels with an arsenal that runs from the shotgun and chaingun to the iconic BFG 9000.
Its fast, fluid movement, atmospheric 3D environments, secret-filled level design and driving soundtrack set the standard for the genre. Distributed as shareware, Doom spread to tens of millions of computers, popularised online deathmatch multiplayer and user-made WAD mods, and built a modding culture that still thrives today, while becoming a cultural touchstone endlessly ported to unlikely devices.
To play it now, the 2024 enhanced re-release of Doom + Doom II bundles the classics with add-ons and online play across PC and consoles, while the 2016 reboot reimagines the formula for modern hardware.
