Quake
Quake is a 1996 first-person shooter developed by id Software. Players battle through gothic, Lovecraftian levels filled with monsters, using an arsenal of weapons to survive a dark, atmospheric campaign steeped in dread, backed by a moody soundtrack from Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.
The game was a technical milestone, rendering environments and enemies with true real-time 3D polygons rather than the sprites and pseudo-3D of earlier shooters, and supporting fluid online multiplayer over networks. Its fast movement, techniques like rocket-jumping, and open modding tools including the QuakeC scripting language fostered a thriving community that produced mods, custom maps and organized competitive play, and helped popularize the concept of clans.
Quake helped pioneer online deathmatch and the modern 3D shooter, and its engine underpinned many later games. It remains available through digital storefronts, with an enhanced re-release adding extra content, additional episodes and modern conveniences.
