River Raid

Players pilot a fighter jet up a winding river, shooting enemy helicopters, ships, jets, and bridges while steering around the riverbanks and constantly refueling by flying over fuel depots to keep a steadily draining tank from running dry.
Its vertically scrolling action, tense fuel-management mechanic that turned depots into both lifelines and targets, and a procedurally generated river that produced consistent yet varied levels made it a standout on the Atari 2600 and a major commercial success.
