Microsoft Solitaire (Klondike)
Microsoft Solitaire is a digital version of the single-player card game Klondike, first bundled with Windows 3.0 in 1990. The goal is to move all fifty-two cards onto four foundation piles, one per suit built up in order from Ace to King, by arranging cards into descending, alternating-colour sequences across seven tableau columns and drawing from the stockpile.
Microsoft included it partly to teach new users the click-and-drag mouse gestures that the graphical Windows interface depended on - and it quietly became one of the most-played computer games ever, a fixture of office breaks around the world. Its mix of luck and light strategy makes each deal a short, satisfying puzzle, and the game was later inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
Today the free Microsoft Solitaire Collection continues it on Windows and mobile, while browser sites such as solitaired.com offer instant Klondike play on any device.
