Lumines

Lumines is a 2004 music puzzle game developed by Q Entertainment for the PlayStation Portable, led by designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi. It blends falling-block puzzling with a synchronized audiovisual experience driven by an evolving electronic soundtrack.

Players drop two-by-two blocks composed of two colors into the playfield, aligning same-colored squares of at least two-by-two, which are then cleared by a "timeline" bar that continuously sweeps across the field in rhythm with the music. As play continues, the background visuals, sound effects, block skins and beats shift through a sequence of distinct "skins," each with its own song and mood, turning the puzzle into a hypnotic, ever-changing multimedia experience.

Lumines was a critically acclaimed PSP launch-window standout that showcased the handheld's multimedia potential and launched a series of sequels. It has been remastered for modern platforms, keeping its mesmerizing fusion of puzzle and music available to new players.
