Marble Madness
Marble Madness is a 1984 puzzle game developed by Atari Games in which players guide a marble through a series of surreal isometric courses using a trackball controller. Each level must be completed before a strict timer expires, with any remaining time carrying over to the next course to add mounting pressure. Falling off the track, being crushed, or absorbed by enemies costs precious seconds rather than lives.
The game was technically ambitious for its era, featuring pseudo-3D isometric visuals, ramps, inclines, and hazards such as the acid pools and the hammer-wielding creatures that could tip or knock the marble off course. It was also among the first arcade games to use a digital stereo soundtrack composed by Brad Fuller and Hal Canon, and its precise physics demanded careful, deliberate control. A two-player mode let marbles race and even nudge each other.
Marble Madness was ported to many home systems and has inspired numerous rolling-ball games since. The original can be enjoyed today through retro collections and emulation, ideally with a trackball for the authentic feel.
