Puyo Puyo
Puyo Puyo is a 1991 falling-block puzzle game developed by Compile, in which players drop pairs of colored blobs called Puyo into a well, clearing them by grouping four or more of the same color together. It grew out of the Madou Monogatari series into an icon of competitive puzzling, especially in Japan.
The game's heart is the chain reaction: clearing one group causes the Puyo above to fall and potentially form new matching groups, and skilled players deliberately set up elaborate cascading combos that dump large amounts of clear "garbage" Puyo onto their opponent's field. This head-to-head offensive dynamic, where building bigger chains buries the rival, made it a cornerstone of competitive, versus-focused puzzle play.
Puyo Puyo became a hugely popular and enduring series across arcades and consoles, later spawning crossover titles that combined it with Tetris. Its original design remains the foundation of a franchise still celebrated for its accessible yet strategically deep competitive puzzling.
