Lemmings
Lemmings is a 1991 puzzle game developed by DMA Design. Players must guide streams of small, mindless creatures safely from an entrance to an exit by assigning them one of several jobs, such as digging, mining, building bridges, climbing or blocking, solving each level before too many are lost.
The game was praised for its clever, escalating puzzle design and its charming, expendable little characters that marched forward relentlessly unless directed otherwise. Balancing a required save percentage against a time limit and a finite number of skills, it offered a distinctive mix of strategy, planning and quick reactions, and included the drastic option to detonate every lemming when a level went wrong.
Lemmings became a defining puzzle game of its era and was ported to a remarkable range of systems, from home computers to consoles and handhelds. It remains playable today through re-releases and spiritual successors that carry on its rescue-the-crowd concept.
