Dr. Mario

1990 Nintendo R&D1 Falling-block puzzle Updated 25 Jul 2026

Dr. Mario is a 1990 falling-block puzzle game developed by Nintendo R&D1, casting Mario in a lab coat as a physician who tosses colored, two-segment vitamin capsules into a jar to eliminate colored viruses. It arrived amid the puzzle-game boom sparked by Tetris and released across the NES and Game Boy.

Players rotate and position the red, blue and yellow capsules to line up four or more matching colors in a row or column, clearing the aligned viruses and capsule pieces from the bottle. The interplay of capsule colors, careful stacking and virus placement created satisfying combo clears and a steadily rising challenge as higher levels packed more viruses onto the screen, all set to two catchy, iconic background tracks.

Dr. Mario became an enduring Nintendo puzzle staple, reappearing and being remade across many platforms and generations, including later mobile entries. It has been re-released repeatedly through digital services and remains a simple, compulsive classic of the falling-block genre.
