Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Professor Layton and the Curious Village is a 2007 handheld puzzle-adventure developed by Level-5 for the Nintendo DS. The gentleman archaeologist Hershel Layton and his young apprentice Luke arrive in a peculiar town called St. Mystere to investigate an inheritance, only to find residents who speak almost entirely in brainteasers.

Blending an animated storybook mystery with well over a hundred standalone logic puzzles, riddles, sliding-block challenges and brainteasers, the game rewarded curiosity as players solved conundrums to earn "Picarats" and advance the plot toward a surprising twist. Its charming hand-drawn art, elegant orchestral score and fully voiced animated cutscenes gave it a distinctive cinematic warmth uncommon for a puzzle game.

Curious Village launched a long-running and beloved series of sequels and prequels that made puzzle solving broadly appealing to a wide audience. It has been re-released in updated form on modern mobile platforms, ensuring its gentle, clever mysteries remain widely accessible.
