Minesweeper

1990 Microsoft Puzzle Updated 26 Jul 2026

Minesweeper is a single-player logic puzzle game in which the player clears a rectangular grid without detonating any of the mines hidden across it. Popularised by Microsoft, which bundled it with Windows 3.1 in 1992, it became one of the most-played computer games in history simply by being pre-installed on hundreds of millions of PCs.

Clicking a safe square reveals a number showing how many of its eight neighbouring squares contain mines; players use these numbers to deduce which squares are safe and flag the ones they suspect, winning by uncovering every mine-free cell. Part quick reflex and part pure deduction, it rewards careful logic and punishes careless guesses, and speed-running the expert board became a niche competitive pursuit. Alongside Solitaire, it quietly taught a generation precise mouse control.
