Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is a 1999 turn-based strategy game developed by Firaxis Games. A spiritual successor to Civilization designed by Brian Reynolds and Sid Meier, it picks up where humanity's escape from a dying Earth ends, as the survivors' colony ship fractures into seven ideological factions who colonize the alien world of Chiron and struggle over its future.
The game deepened the 4X formula with a unit design workshop that let players build custom units from researched components, extensive terraforming, a social-engineering system, and a mysterious native alien ecology tied to the sentient planet itself. Its exploration of philosophy, ecology, and politics, delivered through memorable faction leaders and evocative quotations that accompanied each technology, gave it a literary depth rare in the genre. It is frequently cited among the greatest strategy games ever made.
