The Sims 2

2004 Maxis Life simulation Updated 25 Jul 2026

The Sims 2 is a 2004 life simulation developed by Maxis, the hugely successful sequel to the best-selling original created by Will Wright. Players create and control virtual people, guiding their daily lives, relationships, careers, and homes in an open-ended digital dollhouse with no fixed goals.

The game added full three-dimensional graphics, letting the camera rotate and zoom freely, along with genetics that passed physical traits between generations and a system of lifelong aspirations, wants, and fears that gave each Sim a deeper personality. These additions made simulated lives feel more meaningful as characters aged through distinct life stages from birth to death, something the original lacked. A robust build mode and Create-a-Sim tool encouraged endless customization.

The Sims 2 received numerous expansion packs, adding universities, nightlife, businesses, and pets, and remains one of the most beloved entries in the franchise. It laid groundwork for later sequels, and its creative, open-ended sandbox continues to inspire the series today.
