Animal Crossing

Animal Crossing is a 2001 life simulation developed by Nintendo EAD, in which the player moves into a village populated by animal neighbors and lives at their own pace, with no win condition or fail state. It originally launched in Japan on the Nintendo 64 before reaching wider audiences on the GameCube.

The game runs on a real-time clock and calendar, so shops open and close, seasons change, and holiday events occur based on the console's actual date and time. Players fish, catch bugs, dig up fossils, decorate their home, pay off an ever-expanding mortgage to the raccoon shopkeeper Tom Nook, write letters, and build relationships with quirky, personality-driven villagers. The GameCube version even included playable classic NES games as furniture.

Its gentle, open-ended charm created a template for the cozy-game genre and grew into one of Nintendo's most beloved series. Later entries have expanded the concept on newer handheld and home hardware, carrying the relaxing formula to an enormous global audience.
