Pikmin
Pikmin is a 2001 real-time strategy game developed by Nintendo EAD for the GameCube, casting players as the tiny astronaut Captain Olimar, stranded on an alien planet and racing to recover his crashed ship's thirty scattered parts before his life support runs out.
Olimar commands swarms of plant-like creatures called Pikmin, plucked from the ground and bred in onions, with red, yellow, and blue types each offering different abilities such as fire resistance or the ability to swim. Players direct them to carry objects, battle hostile wildlife, and build bridges, all under a strict thirty-day time limit that pushes efficient route planning and careful management of a growing, easily lost army.
Its charming, accessible take on strategy stood out on consoles and spawned an enduring franchise praised for its unique blend of cuteness and tension. Sequels have continued and refined the concept on later Nintendo systems, and the original has been re-released in updated form, so it remains readily playable today.
