Dragon's Lair

1983 Cinematronics Interactive movie Updated 26 Jul 2026

Dragon's Lair is a 1983 interactive movie developed by Cinematronics, using LaserDisc technology to deliver full-motion animation by ex-Disney animator Don Bluth. Players control the knight Dirk the Daring as he ventures through a wizard's castle to rescue Princess Daphne from the dragon Singe, encountering a gauntlet of traps, monsters, and collapsing rooms.

Rather than traditional sprite movement, gameplay consists of quick-time inputs: players press the correct direction or sword button at precise moments to trigger the next animated sequence, with any mistake resulting in one of Dirk's many elaborate and often comical deaths. Its cartoon-quality visuals were astonishing for an arcade of the era, though the small pool of scenes meant success came largely through memorisation and reflexes rather than exploration.

Dragon's Lair became a cultural landmark, even appearing in museum collections, and helped popularise the interactive-movie format alongside its follow-up Space Ace. It has been re-released across many modern platforms, letting new audiences experience its striking hand-drawn animation.
