Reader Rabbit

Reader Rabbit is a 1986 edutainment title developed by The Learning Company, a pioneer of educational software. It introduces young children to reading through friendly, game-based activities centered on a cheerful rabbit mascot.

The program guides players through word-matching, sorting, spelling, and letter-recognition exercises designed to build early literacy skills in a playful, low-pressure way, rewarding progress with encouraging animations rather than punishing mistakes. Simple, colorful, and approachable, it became a fixture in homes and classrooms during the personal-computer boom and helped define the edutainment genre alongside other Learning Company titles.

The character anchored a long-running series that expanded across many age levels and subjects, spawning decades of sequels and spin-offs on evolving platforms, and it remains a nostalgic landmark of early childhood educational gaming.
