Freelancer
Freelancer is a 2003 space trading and combat game developed by Digital Anvil, a studio co-founded by Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, and published by Microsoft. It offers a vast open galaxy to explore, trade, and fight across.
Using an unusually accessible, mouse-driven flight scheme, you fly missions, haul cargo between star systems, trade commodities for profit, upgrade your ship and equipment, and battle pirates and rival factions within a living, interconnected universe called the Sirius sector. A scripted single-player story campaign guides the early hours before the game opens up into largely free-roaming play. Its approachable controls and expansive sandbox made it a beloved space game despite a famously long and troubled development that eventually passed to Microsoft.
A dedicated community kept persistent multiplayer servers and total-conversion mods alive for many years after release, and it remains a fondly remembered touchstone for open-universe space adventures.
