Papers, Please is a 2013 document-thriller developed by Lucas Pope, an independent designer. You play an immigration inspector at a checkpoint in the fictional dystopian nation of Arstotzka, deciding who may enter.

Gameplay revolves around scrutinizing passports, permits, and other paperwork for discrepancies, cross-checking details against ever-changing daily rules while racing the clock to process enough people to feed and shelter your family. Small choices carry heavy moral weight, from bending rules for the desperate to detaining smugglers, and branching outcomes across multiple endings reflect the human cost of bureaucracy and totalitarian control.
