The Binding of Isaac
The Binding of Isaac is a 2011 roguelike dungeon crawler developed by Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl, following McMillen's success with Super Meat Boy. Built in Flash, it sends a crying child fleeing his fanatical mother into a monster-filled basement.
Each run generates randomized rooms, enemies, bosses, and a huge pool of items that stack and combine in wild, unpredictable ways to transform Isaac's tears-based attacks and abilities. Its dark, religious-themed imagery, grotesque body horror, and pitch-black humor set it apart, while permadeath, unlockable characters, and endless item synergies gave it enormous replay value. It became a cornerstone of the roguelike revival and one of the most influential and imitated indie games of the decade.
A full remake, Rebirth, rebuilt it with a new engine, content, and co-op, and multiple large expansions massively broadened it further; it remains available across PC, console, and handheld platforms.
