Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate is a 1998 role-playing game developed by BioWare. Based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons ruleset and set in the Forgotten Realms, it follows a young orphan raised in the fortress of Candlekeep who is caught up in a sprawling adventure across the Sword Coast, assembling a party of companions to uncover a dangerous conspiracy tied to their own origins.
The game combined real-time-with-pause combat, in which battles could be frozen to issue precise orders, with rich storytelling, expansive exploration and detailed character building drawn from the tabletop rules. Its memorable companions with their own personalities and banter, its faithful adaptation of D&D spells and classes, and its use of the Infinity Engine helped revitalize the computer role-playing genre.
Baldur's Gate is regarded as a landmark that helped shape modern party-based RPGs. An enhanced edition updates the original for current platforms, while the acclaimed series continues to this day with new installments.
