Fallout
Fallout is a 1997 role-playing game developed by Interplay. Set in a retro-futuristic post-apocalyptic wasteland shaped by nuclear war, it sends the player out from the underground Vault 13 to find a vital water chip and, later, to confront a greater threat, navigating a ruined world shaped by their choices.
The game was praised for its deep SPECIAL character system governing attributes, skills and perks, its open-ended quests, and the freedom to resolve situations through combat, dialogue, stealth or diplomacy. Its turn-based tactical combat used action points, while its darkly humorous tone, mature themes, moral ambiguity and branching outcomes gave choices real weight, with a reactive world reinforcing consequence.
Fallout became the foundation of a beloved franchise that later moved into 3D and first-person perspectives under a new developer. The original remains available through digital storefronts, standing as an influential landmark of the western computer role-playing game.
