Planescape: Torment is a 1999 role-playing game developed by Black Isle Studios, set in the surreal Planescape campaign world and built on the Infinity Engine that powered the Baldur's Gate games. Players awaken as the Nameless One, an immortal amnesiac in a strange multiverse, piecing together a fractured identity across countless past lives.
Rather than emphasizing combat, the game prioritized dialogue, philosophy, and choice, posing questions about mortality, memory, and what can change a person's nature. Its writing was exceptionally deep, with an enormous word count for its time, and companions ranged from a floating talking skull to a suit of living armor and a chaste succubus. Death was often a puzzle to exploit rather than a game-over, tying the mechanics directly to the story's themes.
Though a modest seller, it became a revered landmark of narrative game design, celebrated for proving RPGs could be genuinely literary. An enhanced edition with modernized presentation has kept it playable on current systems, introducing its remarkable story to new audiences.
