Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII is a 1997 role-playing game developed by Square for the PlayStation. It follows the mercenary Cloud Strife and the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE opposing the Shinra corporation, in a story that expands into a sweeping tale of identity, loss and planetary survival against the antagonist Sephiroth.
The game combined pre-rendered backgrounds with 3D character models and cinematic full-motion cutscenes, and its Materia system let players slot magical orbs into equipment for flexible, customizable spells and abilities. Turn-based combat used the Active Time Battle system, while summons, Limit Breaks and optional superbosses added depth. Its emotional storytelling, including one of gaming's most famous character deaths, left a lasting mark on players around the world.
Widely credited with popularizing Japanese RPGs in Western markets, it remains a landmark of the genre. Today it is available through digital re-releases on many platforms, alongside a modern multi-part remake that reimagines the story for new audiences.
