Phantasy Star
Phantasy Star is a 1987 RPG developed by Sega for the Master System, an ambitious early console role-playing game that blended science fiction with fantasy. Players guide the heroine Alis on a quest across three planets to avenge her brother and overthrow a tyrannical ruler.
The game was remarkable for its time, featuring smoothly animated first-person dungeons rendered in a pseudo-3D style, colorful animated monster sprites, and a strong female protagonist, all rare for the genre in that era. Its scope and presentation, shipped on a large cartridge with battery-backed saving, pushed the hardware well beyond expectations and gave it a cinematic feel rival games lacked.
As a pioneer of console RPGs and the start of a long-running series that eventually became a landmark online game, it earned lasting historical importance. The original has been re-released in Sega compilations and on classic-game services, letting modern players experience one of the genre's early landmarks.
