OutRun
OutRun is a 1986 racing game developed by Sega in which players drive a Ferrari-style convertible across sunlit European landscapes against the clock. Rather than competing against rivals for position, the goal is to reach each checkpoint before time runs out, choosing branching paths at the end of every stage that lead to five different destinations and endings across a fifteen-stage map.
The game was a technical showcase, with Yu Suzuki's sprite-scaling engine producing a fast, fluid sense of speed, and some deluxe cabinets physically rolled and tilted to simulate the ride. Players could select their in-game music from a virtual radio featuring tracks like "Magical Sound Shower" and "Passing Breeze," and its breezy tunes became iconic of the arcade era. A passenger and a manual or automatic gearbox added to the leisurely cruising fantasy.
OutRun defined the arcade driving experience and spawned many sequels and homages. The original and its follow-ups appear in Sega retro collections, keeping its sunny cruising alive today.
