Destruction Derby
Destruction Derby is a 1995 racing game developed by Reflections, a vehicular combat racer that made crashing the point rather than a mistake. Players scored points by wrecking opponents, whether through races that rewarded ramming, last-car-standing survival events, or full demolition-derby arenas fought in a bowl.
The game featured impressive deformable car damage for its era, with vehicles visibly crumpling, losing performance and eventually being knocked out of action as their engines failed. This focus on destruction, combined with tight arenas, aggressive AI and a satisfying scoring system, gave it a chaotic appeal that distinguished it from conventional racers of the time.
An early hit on Sony's console, Destruction Derby launched a series and helped popularize the crash-focused racing subgenre. Its spirit lives on in later vehicular-combat and demolition games, and the original can be found through retro and digital re-releases.
