Colin McRae Rally
Also known as Colin McRae Rally 1
Colin McRae Rally is a 1998 racing game developed by Codemasters, a rally title made with the involvement of the celebrated Scottish world champion whose name it bore. It aimed for greater authenticity than typical arcade racers of the time while remaining approachable for newcomers.
The game featured stage-based rally competition across varied countries and surfaces such as gravel, tarmac and snow, with progressive car damage that affected handling, the ability to make timed repairs between stages, and the tension of racing against the clock guided by a co-driver's pace notes. Its careful balance of accessibility and simulation helped bring rallying to a wide console audience and established a hugely respected franchise.
Colin McRae Rally launched a long line of rally and later DiRT games, and its influence is felt across modern rally titles. The series' continuing evolution keeps its authentic-yet-approachable style available to players today.
