F-Zero
F-Zero is a 1990 racing game developed by Nintendo as a launch title for the Super Nintendo, showcasing the console's Mode 7 scaling to create a sensation of blistering speed. Players pilot futuristic hovercraft around winding tracks suspended above sprawling sci-fi cityscapes.
With no weapons and no rival items, the challenge came purely from mastering the razor-sharp handling, managing an energy meter that doubled as health and drained when you clipped walls, and memorizing each circuit's treacherous turns. Four distinct machines with different speed and grip tradeoffs encouraged players to find a vehicle that suited their style. The sheer velocity was unlike anything home players had seen at the time.
F-Zero helped define the high-speed racing genre and inspired countless imitators. Its iconic pilot Captain Falcon later found wider fame in Nintendo's crossover fighting games. The original remains available on classic-game services for those wanting to feel its pioneering rush.
