Sega Rally Championship
Also known as Sega Rally
Sega Rally Championship is a 1995 racing game developed by Sega AM3, an arcade rally racer built on Model 2 hardware. It brought off-road competition to a genre dominated by circuit racing, sending players across desert, forest and mountain stages in cars evoking real rally machines like the Toyota Celica and Lancia Delta.
Its standout feature was surface-dependent handling: the car behaved distinctly differently on tarmac, gravel and mud, making the mastery of controlled drifting essential to keep momentum. This grippy, tactile physics model, combined with a tight time-attack structure, checkpoint pressure and an encouraging co-driver calling corners, gave it a uniquely satisfying feel that influenced rally games for years.
Widely regarded as a genre-defining classic and a favorite for its two-player split-screen, Sega Rally Championship has appeared in later compilations and digital forms, keeping its pioneering off-road racing accessible to modern players.
