Micro Machines
Micro Machines is a 1991 racing game developed by Codemasters, based on the line of tiny toy vehicles. It placed players in a top-down world where miniature cars, boats, tanks and helicopters raced across everyday surfaces like kitchen tables, pool tables, sandpits and garden paths.
The game's charm came from its clever sense of scale, turning breakfast spreads, desks and workbenches into elaborate tracks strewn with pencils, spilled cereal and other household hazards, and from its excellent multiplayer. The head-to-head mode rewarded pushing rivals off the edge of the screen to gain ground, and later entries in the series famously let several players share controllers. Fast, funny and fiercely competitive, it became a beloved staple across many home systems.
Micro Machines spawned a long-running series celebrated for couch multiplayer, and its playful, scale-shifting racing concept continues to inspire party racers, with entries and re-releases available for nostalgic players.
