Carmageddon is a 1997 vehicular combat and racing game developed by Stainless Games, loosely inspired by the film Death Race 2000. Rather than simply racing to a finish line, players can win a race one of three ways: completing the laps, wrecking every rival vehicle, or, most notoriously, running down all the pedestrians, all within large open environments and a darkly comic tone.

Its over-the-top violence and slow-motion splatter made it one of the most controversial games of its time, drawing censorship, green-blood or zombie substitutions, and outright bans in several countries, controversy that only fueled its notoriety and sales. Beneath the shock value lay a genuinely open, physics-driven driving game with vehicle damage, upgrades funded by kills, and a rebellious sense of humor.

Carmageddon spawned sequels and a later franchise revival, and the original endures as a cult classic emblematic of the provocative, boundary-pushing games of the late 1990s.
