FTL: Faster Than Light is a 2012 roguelike strategy game developed by Subset Games, a two-person independent team, funded through an early, hugely successful crowdfunding campaign. You captain a lone spaceship fleeing across a hostile galaxy pursued by a rebel fleet.

Managing power, crew, and systems in real time with a pause function, you navigate randomized sectors, making choices at events and engaging in tense ship-to-ship battles where a single hull breach, fire, or boarding party can spell disaster. You target enemy subsystems, reroute energy, and unlock a range of distinct ships and layouts, while permadeath and procedurally generated runs make each attempt different and demand careful resource decisions. Its addictive tension, depth, and clarity made it a foundational title in the modern roguelike-strategy revival.

A free expansion added more content, ships, and systems, and it remains widely available on PC and tablets, still influencing spaceship management games years later.
