Jagged Alliance 2 is a 1999 turn-based strategy game developed by Sir-Tech. Players are hired to liberate the fictional country of Arulco from the ruthless dictator Deidranna by recruiting a squad of mercenaries and retaking the nation sector by sector in tactical, turn-based firefights that reward flanking, cover, and careful use of the action-point system.
The game paired deep tactical combat with a strategic layer of managing finances, buying equipment, training local militias to defend liberated towns, and holding captured territory against counterattacks. Its mercenaries came with distinct personalities, voice-acted banter, skills, and even relationships and rivalries that affected morale, giving the roster genuine character. This blend of tactics, management, and humor earned it a reputation as one of the finest tactical games ever made.
