Myth: The Fallen Lords
Myth: The Fallen Lords is a 1997 real-time tactics game developed by Bungie. Set in a grim, Tolkien-influenced fantasy world overrun by the undead armies of the sorcerer Balor and his Fallen Lords, it puts players in command of small squads of soldiers, archers, and dwarves in tense, story-driven tactical battles narrated through somber journal entries.
The game broke from genre convention by discarding base-building and resource gathering entirely, focusing instead on maneuvering a fixed, hard-won force across fully 3D terrain where elevation, terrain, weather, and physics all shaped the outcome; explosive dwarves could send body parts and blood sliding down slopes. This emphasis on pure tactics, along with its gruesome atmosphere and pioneering online multiplayer through Bungie's Bungie.net service, made it a critical success and a distinctive entry in strategy history.
Myth spawned sequels and a lasting fan community, and dedicated volunteer projects have kept the games playable on modern systems.
