Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a 2001 first-person shooter developed by Gray Matter Interactive with id Software, a modern revival of the genre-defining Wolfenstein series. Players become Allied agent B.J. Blazkowicz, battling Nazi forces and their supernatural occult experiments, undead soldiers, and paranormal projects during World War II.
The game combined visceral single-player action, mixing conventional soldiers and elite guards with paranormal horrors born of the fictional SS Paranormal Division, with a team-based multiplayer mode that proved hugely influential and popular in its own right. Built on the id Tech 3 engine, it delivered tense, atmospheric combat across castles, crypts, secret bases, and forests, with class-based objective multiplayer that pitted Allies against Axis over sabotage and escort missions.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein helped keep the classic franchise alive for a new generation and its multiplayer spawned a devoted competitive scene. The original remains available on digital storefronts, remembered fondly for both its campaign and its team-based multiplayer.
